Thayir Vadai / Curd Vadai


Ingredients needed:
  • Medhu Vadai - 6
  • Carrot - 2
  • Corainder leaves - little
  • Jeera powder  - little
  • Chili powder - little
  • Chat masala (optional) - little
  • Thick curd - 2 cups
  • Salt - little
To grind : 
  • Coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Green chili - 1

Method : 

                  Make medu vadai : click for recipe hereGrind Coconut + green chili into smooth paste by adding little water take it in a bowl and mix it with curd + salt. Peel carrot skin and grate it. Chop coriander finely and set aside. 

In a serving bowl spread little curd mixture and place vadais on it then pour remaining curd mixture on top of it and sprinkle jeera powder , chili powder , chat masala powder and grated carrot , coriander leaves... allow it soak for few minutes and serve it . 

If you wish you can soak the medu vadai in hot water once fried and squeeze water well then soak it in curd mixture .

You can also use kara boondi to garnish. Mix it well and then serve it ..

Mixed Vegetable Soya Chunks Biriyani


Ingredients needed :
  • Basmathi rice - 2 cups
  • Soya chunks - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 2
  • Carrot - 1
  • Beans - 5 to 6
  • Capsicum - 1
  • Ginger - little
  • Garlic pod - 1
  • Jeera - little
  • Fennel seeds - little
  • Shahi jeera - little
  • Biriyani Masala - 3 tsp. 
  • Lemon juice - little
  • Salt 
  • Butter  + oil 



Method: 

                Clean basmathi rice and drain all excess water and set aside for few minutes. Chop Onions , capsicum , carrot, beans lengthwise and keep it ready. 

Take a pan and add water + salt and allow it to boil well add soya chunks and allow it to cook for 5 minutes ...then drain the water and rinse it well with cold water well and squeeze excess water and keep it aside. 

Heat a kadai and add oil + butter + jeera + fennel seeds + shahi jeera + onions + salt and fry well to this add capsicum and fry it for few more minutes to this add carrot + beans cover and fry it for few minutes ..then add Biriyani Masala (You can also use store bought biriyani masala powder )+ Soya chunks + lemon juice and mix it well and transfer it to rice cooker to this add soaked basmathi rice + water and mix it and cook it . 


Serve it with Spicy potato curry or Raita . 

Note : I have used store bought biriyani masala powder.

Angaya Podi


This podi is usually given as Pathiya sapadu for new mothers and it also very good for health . 

Ingredients needed:
  • Manathakkali Vathal
  • Sundaikkai Vathal
  • Pepper
  • Dried red chili
  • Dried Veppam poo
  • Dry Ginger powder / Sukku powder
  • Dhaniya 
  • Urid dhal
  • Toor dhal
  • Chana dhal
  • Jeera
  • Hing powder
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt 



Method :

              Heat a kadai and dry fry all the ingredients except hing + turmeric powder + salt  and allow it to cool well and then grind it into smooth powder and to this add hing + turmeric powder + salt and mix it well and store it in airtight container. 

Add 2 or 3 tsp. of powder to hot rice + ghee and mix it well .

Tomato Soup


Ingredients needed: 
  • Ripe Tomatoes - 4
  • Onion - 1
  • Beetroot - 2 piece
  • Garlic pod - 1
  • Milk - 1/2 cup
  • Cornflour - little
  • Jeera
  • Salt
  • Pepper powder
  • Butter 
  • Tomato Sauce (optional) - little
  • Mixed dried Herbs - a pinch 


Method: 

             Heat a pan / kadai (or you can also Pressure cook) add little butter + garlic pods + jeera  + beetroot + water and allow it to cook well when it is almost done add roughly chopped onions + tomatoes and cook it till done ...once done strain the water and keep it aside add cooked beetroot , onion , tomatoes into mixer grinder and grind it into smooth paste to this add the water which you have set aside add more water if needed and strain it well .. (I skipped this step)

Now heat a pan add the grounded paste / soup + tomato sauce + salt + dried herbs + pepper and allow it to boil well ..in a small cup take little cornflour and mix it with milk and add it to the soup and boil it well ...serve it hot with bread.

Soya Kheema Roll



Saw this recipe here. Made few changes to the recipe and tried it, you can also use Soya grnaules too ..

Ingredients needed :

  • Chapathi - 2
  • Soya chunks - 1 cup
  • Onion - 3
  • Tomato - 2
  • Carrot - 1
  • Coriander leaves - little
  • Chili powder - 1/2 tsp.
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp.
  • Jeera powder - little
  • Dhaniya powder - little
  • Garam masala powder - little
  • Lemon juice - little
  • Salt 
  • Oil


Method : 

          Heat a pan add water + little salt and allow it to boil well to this add soya chunks and cook it for few minutes ...once done drain excess water if any and wash soya chunks in cold water well and squeeze chunks and remove the excess water and set aside. 

Peel skin of carrot and grate it . Chop onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves finely ..Heat a kadai and add oil + onions + Slat  and fry well to this add tomatoes and cook for few more minutes to this add jeera powder + dhaniya powder + chili powder + turmeric powder + garam masala powder and mix it to this add grated carrots and cooked soya chunks and mix it well and cook for few more minutes once done add lemon juice and mix it well and switch off the flame and allow it to cool ..

Meanwhile , prepare chapathi and take little soya kheema and place it in a corner of chapathi and roll it tightly and serve it .. Goes excellent with bread too.

Masala Kuzhi Paniyaram


Ingredients needed:
  • Paniyaram Batter  - check here
  • Onion - 2
  • Carrot - 1
  • Hing - little
  • Green Chili - 1 
  • Ginger - little
  • Coriander leaves - little
  • Curry leaves - 1 string
  • Salt - little
  • Oil
To temper : 
  • Oil
  • Mustard seeds
  • Urid dhal 
  • Jeera 

Method: 

Chop onions , ginger, green chili,  corainder leaves , curry leaves finely , peel carrot skin and grate it ..Heat a small pan and add oil and temper mustard seeds + urid dhal + jeera

Take  batter in a bowl to this add onions + carrot + coriander leaves + curry leaves + green chili + ginger + hing powder + salt + tempered ingredients and mix it well ..if needed add very little water ..

Heat paniyaram pan and add oil in each circle and batter and allow it to cook well , keep the flame in medium heat so that the batter gets cooked well ...after few mins turn it slowly and cook it in other side too..Serve hot with chutney / pickle / Idli milagai podi .

Chakkarai Paal Pongal



Ingredients needed : 
  • Raw rice - 1 cup
  • Moong dhal - handful
  • Milk - 2 cups
  • Jaggery - 1 cup
  • Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  • Ghee
  • Cashews 
  • Raisins
  • Elachi powder
Method : 

Pressure cook rice and moong dhal together by adding 2 cups of water + 2 cups of milk , cook it for 4 or 5 whistle and once the pressure is released mash the rice well and set aside.. 

Heat a pan add jaggery + little water and allow it to dissolve well strain the water to remove impurities if any .. in the same pan add ghee + cashew + raisins + add the jaggery water + elachi powder + grated coconut and mix it well to this add mashed cooked rice + dhal and mix it well and cook it for few more minutes to this add more ghee and switch off the flame .

Note : Use Paagu vellam / brown colour jaggery , You get nice colour ..I have used yellow colour jaggery so couldn't get proper colour.

Made it as prasadam for Thai Poosam festival along with Panchamirtham
